Our hypothesis, that was formed prior to departing on the field seminar, was that religion would be central to every Texans identity and that there would be a large Hispanic population. We estimated that in both instances evidence would be manifest on the material landscape. A landscape is defined by not only its physical structures like buildings, décor and signs, but also the perceptual spaces of peoples’ ideas, notions and words. |
Our research objective was to learn more about how religion and ethnicity helped construct a ‘Texas Hill Country’ identity and if our estimations were ill informed or rooted in some spatial truth. In order to understand the identity of the Hill Country, it would be useful to know about the site, situation and characteristics of the region in Texas often named ‘Hill Country’. |
