Methods
In order to evaluate all aspects of space and place, observations gathered from field work were supported post-modern critical theory. Geographer Edward Soja revolutionized the way space was imagined in his work ‘Postmodern Geographies: Reassuring of Space in Critical Theory”. One way to theorize his findings it through a model, see Figure II. If space is affected by perceptions, then in turn space is constructed by what influences peoples realities. For the purpose of this research ethnicity, gender and religion were the most applicable. Notes taken from the field were then deconstructed and analyzed through the post-modern framework.
Observations were gathered during a ten-day field seminar to the Texas Hill Country. Majority of the data was gathered Friday March 20th, 2014 in San Marcos, Texas. Landscape analysis of the physical spaces of San Marcos were noted during the duration of the trip, but
the perceptual spaces of citizens were collected at El Buen Pastor,
a majority Hispanic Methodist church in San Marcos.
Observations were used to gain understanding about socially
constructed landscapes pertaining to identity in the Texas Hill Country.
